To provide safe, clean and reliable
electricity to serve the world’s needs for energy: the
reason for the emergence of AES in the United States,
in 1981, already pointed out to the future. The company
was created by initiative of Roger Sant and Dennis
Bakke, who saw a powerful market in electricity generation,
distribution and sale, with the commitment of preserving
the environment. |

AES Sul is a subsidiary of AES
Corporation, the largest global power generation and distribution
company.
Over
2001, AES Sul invested approximately R$ 71,5 million
in improvements and expansion of the system, in the
customer service structure, in electricity waste-fighting
programs and in social projects. Therefore, the company
gives continuity to the success of its undertakings in
the state, which had already received investments of about
R$ 56 million in 2000, including R$ 3 million invested
in the Call Center’s structure alone.
The largest volume of funds,
however, was applied in the new structures, like substation
construction and digitalization, transmission line expansion
and telemetering in part of the company’s feeders.
Additionally, survey, electricity waste-fighting and
social responsibility programs completed the
set of investments.
For 2002, the investments
of AES Sul Distribuidora Gaúcha de Energia total R$
52 million and include operating improvements, system
expansion, energy effectiveness and social responsibility
programs.

AES’ history in Brazil can be
told by the company’s expansion throughout the country.
The participation in Light’s privatization, in 1996, was
the beginning of AES’ activities in Brazil.
In 1997, the acquisition of 14.42%
of CEMIG-MG’s stock capital occurs. Also in 1997, at
an auction, the company purchases the Companhia Centro
Oeste de Distribuição de Energia Elétrica (former CEEE)
in Rio Grande do Sul, changing its name to AES Sul
Distribuidora Gaúcha de Energia S.A.
|
In the same year, AES was
declared winner of the project of a 600 MW plant,
located in the city of Uruguaiana. The Uruguaiana
Thermal Plant is the largest natural gas-powered
thermal plant in the country and introducer of
the Argentine natural gas into the Brazilian electric
matrix.
|
Eletropaulo/Metropolitana’s shareholding,
through Light in 1998, enabled AES to serve around 14
million people in São Paulo. Recently, CESP-TIETÊ-SP,
responsible for 9 hydro plants generating 2,664 MW,
was merged by AES, which now is its majority shareholder.
